In Celtic myth she was the beautiful daughter of one of the bards at the court of Ulster, of whom it was said that she would grow up to be the most lovely woman in the world but that she would bring death to many and much sorrow to Ulster. Conchobar, the King of Ulster, hid her away, intending to make her his wife, but before he could do this she ran away with Naoise. Later, after many adventures, they were permitted to return to Ulster, but were treacherously attacked, Naoise and his two brothers being killed. Deirdre died of grief a few hours later.
